Ugu District Municipality is a category C municipality which is a municipality that has municipal executive and legislative authority in an area that includes more than one municipality. It is 4 908 km² in extent and boasts a spectacular coastline of 112 kilometres, which forms its Eastern border. The region is bordered in the North by the eThekwini District Municipality, in the West by the Umgungundlovu and Harry Gwala District municipalities and on the Southern side shares its borders with the Eastern Cape Province.
Ray Nkonyeni Municipality previously known as Hibiscus Coast Local Municipality and former Ezinqoleni Local Municipality is one of the four local municipalities under Ugu District Municipality. Ray Nkonyeni Municipality is ranked number five out of the forty three local municipalities in terms of population in the province of KwaZulu Natal (KZN). The municipality consists of a diverse population. There are thirty six wards in total, seventy one councillors and seven departments.
Umdoni Local Municipality is located in KwaZulu-Natal within the Ugu District Municipality (DC21). Our local municipality consists of 19 wards. It abuts eThekwini Metro to the north, and uMzumbe to the south, making it almost halfway from Port Shepstone and Durban. The Municipality is therefore conveniently located about 50 km from Durban and 65 km from Port Shepstone. UMdoni has an approximate coastline of 40 km and stretches inland as far as uMzinto.
